About the Bonds
On May 6, Guilford County residents will vote on $457 million in two school bonds. One $45 million bond on the ballot will build a new Eastern High School to replace the school that burned down. The second $412 million bond will build schools in high-growth areas not yet addressed by previous bonds, particularly in Jamestown and Southeast Guilford County. The $412 million will also relieve crowding in schools across Guilford County.
Two previous school bonds in this decade have improved conditions in many of our schools in Greensboro, High Point and the Northern part of
the county. But the job is not complete. We still have thousands of children attending school in 672 trailers. These children are shortchanged when it comes to libraries, lunchrooms, bathrooms and other common areas. The bonds are needed to update these schools.
The bonds are also needed to keep up with growth. In the eight years since the 2000 bond was approved, the Guilford County student population has grown by more than 9,000 students. Every year an additional 1,300 children enter the school system.
The bonds will provide 7,000 new, safe seats for children. They will do that by building six new schools, and expanding and/or renovating 15 additional schools. The bonds will also provide additional athletic and support facilities at several
schools, and autism wings at three schools.
With your YES vote, you can let students know that schools are important. Please vote yes for kids on May 6.
